Ligature
Language lies between the observation through eyes and senses and their processing into communication. It is not an innocent, naturally given bond to the world, but a structuring medium that is itself already on its way to becoming a system: in order to be communicable, it forces fluid perception into first abstractions and categories, yet remains bound to the fleeting enactment of voice and moment.
Writing makes this intermediate zone visible and lasting: it clarifies the duration of speaking through the movement and direction of the hand, and holds in handwriting a singular trace of perception — its appearance in the world. This raises the question of whether writing closes the gap between the moment of seeing, the recognition of similarities — in Foucault’s sense, The Order of Things — and communication.
In digital drawing, movement becomes visible through the possibility of recording. It is ornament in its appearing and pattern in its structure. The direction that becomes clear in the trace recedes in the loop, because beginning and end flow into one another.
Through the ligature of el and elele, the line becomes a continuous movement. The letter, which had become pattern, becomes drawing and lays bare the concatenation of distinctions. The loop does not close the gap between the moment of seeing, recognition and communication, but keeps the difference visibly in motion.
Every ligature repeats and distinguishes itself simultaneously. Line is world operation, concatenation of the visible and the invisible.
