First time I´ve used watercolour, I didn´t like it, because of the „powerless“ consistency. I missed the resistance of the material. For me it was too smooth, weak, nothing corporeal.
But I rediscovered painting or drawing with watercolour! And I find out how fine it is when I throw the water over my surface, especially paper. I like the way of disappearing and the appearing of new traces, new colours and straying. Its a battle for me, redrawing, reconstructing the running water. Its like drawing in the sand along the waterborder of the sea!

A project on the subject rhythm in visual arts.

Not to be confined by the greatest, yet to be contained within the smallest is a definition, which declared the enterprise of the artists group Rhythm Section.

The substantive trait, which linked the artists of the group Rhythm Section in their works is the commitment to a hyper reflexivity in dealing with the rhythm, not as a compulsion, but as an original constant. The clear handling of the rhythm allows an endless variety of individual variations.

Rhythm Section is a platform for artists, who are interested in an exchange on the subject rhythm in the visual arts.

Rhythm Section consists not only of visual artists representing installation, drawing, video, sculpture, painting, digital art to name a few, but also of art critics and theorists, philosophers, teachers for rhythm and movement.

Parallel to the group shows, Rhythm Section organizes artist talks, lectures and symposiums on the subject rhythm in visual arts.

25 artists,
using watercolor as a medium,
in a former tape and cash register factory in tough IJmuiden,
that should make for a beautiful and interesting exhibition!

This group of 25 artists from home and abroad, united under the name Hydrography has been creating international exhibitions in varying combinations since 2013. So this year they are celebrating their 10th anniversary! We will celebrate this together with a large exhibition in De Visserhallen in IJmuiden and with the presentation of a book.

The group is fluid, just like the material these artists work with. In fact, they seek the challenge of using the “traditional” medium of watercolor in a new abstract way.  Watercolor or watercolor is pure pigment combined with gum arabic and water. The strength of the color can range from light and transparent to super intense. Each pigment has its own specific gravity so each color behaves differently.

The artists are guided in part by gravity and chance. The paint is the boss, but the artist masters the technique and knows the material. It is a search for the possibilities in order to get to the essence; the purity of material and form.

Expositie Hydrography: 20 mei tot en met 11 juni  2023
